Category D1 & D1+E Courses Who needs to take the Category D1 test? Anyone who wants to drive a minibus up to 16 passenger seats, or passed their car driving test before 1st January 1997 and wants to drive a minibus up to 16 passenger seats for hire/reward.
What do I need to do to take the test? You need to obtain provisional entitlement on your licence for Category D1 - see our page "What to Do".
You will need to undertake a driver medical to obtain your licence and pass theory tests prior to your practical training.
What am I entitled to drive after I pass my practical test? A minibus with more than 8 passenger seats up to 16 passenger seats for hire/reward.
To drive professionally, you must pass the practical test and pass both Driver CPC tests (exemptions apply).
Category D1+E - Minibus and trailer If you need to tow a trailer heavier than 750kgs, you will need the appropriate licence.
